Effects of photoionization on similarity properties of streamers at various pressures in air

چکیده

Modelling studies are presented of positive streamers developing at various pressures in air in a point-to-plane discharge geometry. The modelling results emphasize that the quenching of the singlet excited states of molecular nitrogen emitting photoionizing radiation is responsible for non-similar behaviour of streamers at pressures higher than approximately 30 Torr. Our modelling results are consistent with recent experimental work showing that streamers have more and thinner channels and branch more frequently at higher (i.e. near atmospheric) pressures than at lower pressures. The results also demonstrate the importance of accounting for effects associated with electrode geometry for the interpretation of experimental studies on similarity properties of streamers at various pressures.

Effects of photoionization on propagation and branching of positive and negative streamers in sprites

[1] Modeling studies indicate that double-headed streamers originating from single electron avalanches in lightning-driven quasi-static electric fields at mesospheric altitudes accelerate and expand, reaching transverse scales from tens to a few hundreds of meters and propagation speeds up to one tenth of the speed of light, in good agreement with recent telescopic, high-speed video and multich...

Red sprite discharges in the atmosphere at high altitude: the molecular physics and the similarity with laboratory discharges

An overview of the general phenomenology and physical mechanism of large-scale electrical discharges termed ‘sprites’ observed at high altitude in the Earth’s atmosphere above thunderstorms is presented. The primary emphasis is placed on summarizing available experimental data on various emissions documented to date from sprites and interpretation of these emissions in the context of similar da...

Positive streamers in air and nitrogen of varying density: experiments on similarity laws

Positive streamers in ambient air at pressures from 0.013 to 1 bar are investigated experimentally. The voltage applied to the anode needle ranges from 5 to 45 kV, the discharge gap from 1 to 16 cm. Using a ”slow” voltage rise time of 100 to 180 ns, the streamers are intentionally kept thin. For each pressure p, we find a minimal diameter dmin. To test whether streamers at different pressures a...

Interaction of streamer discharges in air and other oxygen-nitrogen mixtures.

The interaction of streamers in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures such as air is studied. First, an efficient method for fully three-dimensional streamer simulations in multiprocessor machines is introduced. With its help, we find two competing mechanisms how two adjacent streamers can interact: through electrostatic repulsion and through attraction due to nonlocal photoionization. The nonintuitive effe...

Application of photoionization models based on radiative transfer and the Helmholtz equations to studies of streamers in weak electric fields

Recent advances in development of photoionization models in air based on radiative transfer and Helmholtz equations open new perspectives for efficient solution of nonthermal gas discharge problems involving complex geometries. Many practical applications require accurate modeling of streamer discharges developing in weak electric fields, in which the photoionization process significantly contr...
